Southern cuisine eatery planned for Carmel house

A house on East Main Street in Carmel could be recast a restaurant that serves Southern coastal fare.

Carmel-based Innovative Planning LLC and Kevin Keltner and Diane Cannon of Carmel-based K&E Property Group LLC have filed plans to renovate a home at 110 E. Main St. and create a restaurant called Juniper on Main.

The eatery would be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and serve cuisine common to Charleston, South Carolina, and Savanna, Georgia.

A sample menu includes items such as fried green tomato benedict, shrimp and grits, and chicken hash. The restaurant has also applied to serve alcohol.

The home is currently vacant. The applicants have filed plans for an 8-by-12-foot addition to the back of the home. The venture would seat 42 people inside and 62 outside under a pergola.

The proposal for the addition and the pergola will go before Carmel’s commercial committee Tuesday. In documents filed with the city, representatives say construction would begin within 10 days of approval.

The proposed restaurant’s nearby neighbors include Woody’s Library and Greek’s Pizzeria.

The Keltner family has owned the home, which dates back to at least 1905, for about 40 years, daughter-in-law Cannon said. In their renovations, they're trying to maintain as many of the home's historic features as possible, she said.

Cannon and her husband, Kevin Keltner, both Carmel natives, lived in Savanna for a few years and worked in a restaurant similar to the one they plan to open.

Cannon hopes to be serving residents by late September or early October.
